Mental illness refers to disorders of the mind. These disorders can cause a person to behave abnormally, which negatively impacts their social, family, and professional lives. The person suffers extreme distress.
Unlike physical diseases, people do not view or attempt to treat mental illness in the same way. This is because people around us are often still unaware of mental health issues. In Bangladesh, there are no good platforms for mental health care, and as a result, people often suffer in silence, which leads to more complex problems over time.
In this article, we will learn about the causes, symptoms, and treatment of mental disorders and psychiatrists.
Causes of Mental Disorders:
The exact cause of mental disorders is still unknown. However, it is believed that they can be hereditary or environmental. Some events, such as major accidents in a person’s past, may lead to mental illness, including sexual harassment. Additionally, people who were raised abnormally in childhood are at a higher risk of suffering from mental disorders later in life.
Many people suffer from depression. If someone experiences excessive depression for more than two weeks, it may be considered a mental disorder. Depression can also lead to suicidal tendencies.
Another issue arises during childbirth, as the physical and mental health of women often deteriorates. Sometimes, mental distress in mothers begins at this stage. Neglect from the family can result in tragic consequences.
Types of Mental Disorders and Symptoms:
Mental disorders are generally classified into two types:
- Neurosis: This is a mild form of mental disorder. People face various pressures due to social, family, financial, or professional issues. Sometimes the symptoms are evident, and other times they are not. This is how neurosis begins. Many people do not consider it a mental illness, so the problem may grow larger. Many people suffer from neurosis.
Below are some psychological symptoms that may indicate someone is suffering from neurosis:
- Bad mood
- Restlessness and fear
- Memory loss
- Low self-esteem
- Excessive emotions or crying over minor issues
- Lack of concentration
- Excessive thoughts of death and helplessness, etc.
Some physical symptoms of neurosis include:
- Sleep problems
- Heart palpitations
- Blurred vision
- Cold or hot hands and feet
- Fainting and difficulty breathing
- Headaches and chest pressure
- Shaking hands and feet, etc.
- Psychosis: This occurs when a person cannot differentiate between reality and imagined events. Psychosis involves the expression of madness. It is a serious mental issue that can significantly affect a person’s normal life.
People with psychosis often suffer from hallucinations. They cannot distinguish between the real world and the imaginary world. This is known as visual or auditory hallucination.
People suffering from psychosis may also feel that they are in danger from their surroundings, even from family members, though these fears are completely unfounded.
Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are two common forms of psychosis.
Psychologists generally attribute psychosis to hereditary causes. Other causes include drug abuse, a contentious environment, Parkinson’s disease, or brain tumours.
Symptoms of psychosis include:
- Excessive or insufficient sleep
- Depression
- Excessive thinking
- Social withdrawal
- Hallucinations
- Lack of concentration
- Suicidal tendencies
Treatment of Mental Disorders:
Many people take mental health issues lightly. Furthermore, some seek help from quacks or herbalists, which only worsens the problem. We should consult a specialist if we notice abnormal behaviour in someone. While physical health issues can be diagnosed through tests, mental health issues cannot be diagnosed in the same way. These issues need to be discussed and evaluated by professionals.
